Key Moves & Abilities

Venoshock(Toxapex)
50

If your opponent's Active Pokémon is Poisoned, this attack does 70 more damage.

Strategy Guide

Auto-generated

Toxapex wins by combining Naganadel's Poison application with Venoshock: if the target is already Poisoned, Venoshock deals 50 + 70 = 120 damage for just two Darkness energy. The deck wins by establishing Poison early and then landing repeated 120-damage KOs, requiring three separate knockouts to reach 3 points.

Open by placing Mareanie and Poipole and using Poke Ball to find both Basics. Professor's Research and Copycat draw into Toxapex and Naganadel since no search trainer in the list fetches Stage 1 evolutions directly. Naganadel's line provides the Poison setup needed to unlock Venoshock's bonus damage. Once a target is Poisoned, bring Toxapex Active and use Venoshock for 120 damage. Poison Barb attaches to force Poison onto any attacker that hits Toxapex, creating a secondary Poison vector. Nihilego provides additional bench utility. Cyrus and Sabrina manage Active-slot manipulation, and May provides draw to cycle through the setup pieces.

Damage Math

Poisoned Active Pokemon

Venoshock base 50 + 70 (Poison bonus) = 120 total at [Darkness,Darkness] cost

Bonus only applies if the target is already Poisoned; Naganadel or Poison Barb must establish Poison first

Non-Poisoned Active Pokemon

Venoshock base 50 with no bonus

Without Poison the attack is below rate; always establish Poison before using Venoshock

Strengths

  • Venoshock deals 120 damage for two energy when Poison is active, an extremely efficient rate for a Stage 1.
  • Poison Barb poisons any attacker that hits the equipped Pokemon, creating a second Poison source beyond Naganadel.
  • Non-ex attackers throughout the deck mean the opponent scores only 1 point per KO, demanding three separate KOs to win.

Weaknesses

  • Venoshock is only 50 damage without Poison setup; if Naganadel is KO'd, the main attack loses 70 damage.Consistency
  • Castform Sunny Form (25%) and Silvally (47%) both hard-counter this deck, limiting ladder viability.Matchup
  • Two-stage setup requirement for full damage makes the deck vulnerable to fast, linear aggression.Tempo

How to Play

Establish Poison Before Attacking with Venoshock

Naganadel evolves from Poipole; use Poke Ball on Poipole and draw into Naganadel through Professor's Research or Copycat. Get Naganadel to inflict Poison on the opponent's Active target first, then immediately bring Toxapex Active. With Poison confirmed, Venoshock hits for 120, KOing most non-ex targets outright and setting up a 1-point score.

Apply Poison Barb as a Secondary Poison Vector

Attach Poison Barb to Toxapex or a Bench Pokemon to poison any attacker that makes contact. This is critical when Naganadel is not yet in play or has been KO'd. A Poison Barb-poisoned attacker becomes an immediate Venoshock target for 120 damage on the following turn, keeping the combo online without relying solely on Naganadel.

How to Beat This Deck

Retreat the Active Pokemon to Remove Poison

Venoshock's 70-damage bonus requires the target to remain Poisoned. Retreating a Poisoned Active removes the status condition, cutting Venoshock back to 50 damage. Keep a low-retreat-cost Basic on the Bench as a Poison-dump pivot, forcing Toxapex to deal subpar damage while you develop your own board.

KO Naganadel to Strip the Poison Source

Naganadel is the primary Poison applicator for this deck. If Naganadel is KO'd before it can inflict Poison, Venoshock is permanently reduced to 50 damage unless Poison Barb compensates. Target Naganadel on the Bench whenever possible; scoring 1 point and crippling the combo is a favorable exchange.

Use Status-Cure Effects to Block the Combo

Any healer or item that removes Special Conditions including Poison directly negates Venoshock's bonus damage, forcing Toxapex to deal 50 damage and requiring Naganadel or Poison Barb to reset the condition. Running status-cure support means even a successfully poisoned Pokemon can be cured before Venoshock fires.

Common Substitutions

Poison setup

  • Naganadel:Primary Poison applicator; Venoshock needs Poison active to deal 120 damage
  • Poison Barb:Secondary Poison source via tool; covers gaps when Naganadel is unavailable

Bench utility

  • Nihilego:Provides additional Bench presence and utility alongside the Toxapex-Naganadel core
