Key Moves & Abilities

Merciless Strike(Galarian Obstagoon)
70

If your opponent's Active Pokémon has damage on it, this attack does 50 more damage.

Strategy Guide

Auto-generated

Galarian Obstagoon uses Merciless Strike to deal 120 damage (70 base + 50 bonus) against any opponent's Active Pokemon that already carries damage, turning pre-placed chip damage into a reliable one-hit KO threat. The deck chips HP using Absol, Bombirdier, Rocky Helmet, and Piers before Obstagoon closes out.

Open by benching Galarian Zigzagoon and using Poké Ball, Professor's Research, and Copycat to build your hand. Rocky Helmet and Absol begin placing damage on opposing Pokemon passively. Mid-game, Piers tutors darkness supporters and Rare Candy skips Galarian Zigzagoon to Galarian Obstagoon directly. Once a target carries damage, Merciless Strike hits for 120. Cyrus locks a damaged target in the Active Spot, and Bombirdier can place additional chip for the final push. Lucky Ice Pop extends Obstagoon's lifespan.

Damage Math

Opponent's damaged Active Pokemon

Merciless Strike base 70 + bonus 50 = 120 damage

Bonus only applies when the Active already has any damage on it

Strengths

  • 120 effective damage reaches KO thresholds on most non-ex Pokemon in a single hit when pre-chip is in place.
  • Rare Candy lets Galarian Zigzagoon evolve directly into Galarian Obstagoon, saving a full turn of setup.
  • Rocky Helmet and Absol passively spread chip damage, guaranteeing the Merciless Strike bonus without spending an attack.

Weaknesses

  • Galarian Obstagoon is a non-ex Stage 2; it awards only 1 point when KO'd, but the deck has limited recovery if both copies are gone.Deckbuilding
  • Merciless Strike deals only 70 against undamaged targets, which falls short of KO thresholds for most relevant attackers.Consistency
  • Fighting-type decks such as Mewtwo ex hit darkness types for weakness, threatening fast knockouts on the stage-2 investment.Matchup

How to Play

Pre-chip with Absol and Rocky Helmet Before Striking

Place Absol and equip Rocky Helmet to passively inflict damage on opposing Pokemon as they attack or enter the Active Spot. Even a single damage counter activates the full Merciless Strike bonus. Piers tutors key darkness cards each turn to keep the engine consistent. Once any target carries damage, Obstagoon swings for 120.

Use Rare Candy and Cyrus to Control Timing

Rare Candy accelerates Galarian Obstagoon to the field, skipping the Galarian Zigzagoon stage entirely. Once Obstagoon is Active, Cyrus traps a damaged opponent in the Active Spot, preventing retreats that would reset damage and deny the Merciless Strike bonus. Bombirdier can add chip if passive sources aren't enough.

How to Beat This Deck

Heal Damage Counters to Block the 50-Damage Bonus

Merciless Strike's bonus requires the Active to carry at least one damage counter. Healing items remove those counters and force Obstagoon to attack at 70 base damage, which is significantly below KO range for most targets. Prioritising healing after Rocky Helmet triggers completely shuts off the deck's primary damage source.

Keep Benched Pokemon Healthy to Deny Passive Chip Targets

Absol and Rocky Helmet inflict chip passively, but replacing a damaged Benched Pokemon or keeping bench count low limits how many targets accumulate damage. Bringing in a fresh attacker with full HP means Obstagoon always faces the 70-damage floor rather than the 120-damage ceiling.

Attack Obstagoon Before It Evolves

Galarian Obstagoon is a Stage 2 requiring Rare Candy or a two-turn evolution. Galarian Zigzagoon has low HP and no damage output. Knocking it out early forces the opponent to topdeck a second Zigzagoon and re-evolve, losing significant tempo in a deck that depends on Rare Candy arriving on schedule.

Common Substitutions

Chip damage source

  • Absol:Core flex at 45% inclusion; inflicts passive damage to prime Merciless Strike's bonus condition.
  • Bombirdier:In 42% of lists; provides targeted chip placement to guarantee at least one damage counter on a specific target.

Damage reduction / longevity

  • Lucky Ice Pop:Present in 35% of lists; keeps Obstagoon healthy while the passive chip plan develops.
