Decidueye ex wins by applying chip damage through Greninja support and then finishing with Pierce the Pain, a two-Colorless attack that deals 100 damage to any opponent's Pokemon that already has damage on it. The deck requires pre-existing damage counters to activate its primary win condition.
Open by playing Froakie with Poké Ball and building toward both Greninja and Decidueye ex simultaneously through draw. Greninja places chip damage on Bench targets, activating the condition for Pierce the Pain. Use Rare Candy to speed Decidueye ex's Stage 2 evolution, getting it into the Active Spot as quickly as possible. Mid-game, alternate between spreading chip damage with Greninja and picking off wounded targets with Pierce the Pain for 100 damage. Razor Leaf at two Grass Energy provides a reliable 80-damage attack when no pre-damaged target is available.
Pierce the Pain
100 damage to any Pokemon with at least 1 damage counter
Colorless cost means it is available as soon as Decidueye ex is evolved; Greninja chip damage enables it immediately
Greninja places damage on Bench targets, activating the condition Pierce the Pain requires. Once a Bench Pokemon has any damage on it, Decidueye ex can hit it for 100 damage with a two-Colorless attack. Coordinate Greninja's damage placement with Guzma or Hiking Trail to pull that wounded target into the Active Spot for a knockout.
Both Greninja and Decidueye ex are Stage 2 Pokemon. Rare Candy skips a middle stage for one of them, critical to getting either attacker online before the opponent applies pressure. Use Professor's Research and Copycat to dig for Rare Candy and the Basic Pokemon early, prioritizing whichever Stage 2 the hand provides first.
Pierce the Pain deals 0 damage to Pokemon with no damage counters. If you heal your targeted Pokemon before Decidueye ex attacks, the attack fails entirely. Healing trainers reset the condition, forcing Decidueye ex to use Razor Leaf instead, a far less efficient use of its energy.
Without Greninja's chip damage output, Decidueye ex cannot activate Pierce the Pain on Bench targets. Targeting Greninja directly removes the tool that makes the deck's combo function. It is a Stage 2 non-ex, costing the opponent only 1 point, but taking it out forces Decidueye ex into the less powerful Razor Leaf mode.
Decidueye ex requires two Stage 2 evolutions to function optimally. Aggressive early decks can score 2 points on a Decidueye ex or Greninja that has not reached its final form yet. Applying maximum pressure in turns two and three prevents the slow combo from ever coming online, winning by tempo before the deck stabilizes.
