Electivire wins by overloading with four or more lightning energy and firing Exciting Voltage for 120 damage. The deck pairs Electivire with Magmortar to maintain constant energy attachment and trading pressure across the game.
Open by placing Electabuzz and Magby to develop both lines simultaneously. Poké Ball finds either basic. Electivire needs at minimum four lightning energy attached to hit 120 with Exciting Voltage: the base requires two, plus two extra for the bonus 80. Volkner and Sightseer support draw and energy access. Magmortar is a companion attacker covering turns when Electivire is not yet loaded. Use Copycat and Professor's Research to maintain hand size and find Electivire via natural draw, then accelerate energy with Volkner.
Exciting Voltage with exactly 2 extra lightning energy attached
base 40 + 80 = 120
Requires at least 4 lightning energy total on Electivire; one-shots most non-ex targets
Exciting Voltage without the 2 extra energy
base 40
Only 2 energy attached; not enough to threaten KOs on anything meaningful
Exciting Voltage only reaches 120 with at least two extra lightning energy beyond the base two-energy cost. Use Volkner to dig for energy and attach every turn. If Electivire is not yet at four energy, keep it on the bench and send Magmortar forward to buy time and maintain offensive presence.
The Magby-Magmortar line develops alongside Electivire. Magmortar attacks while Electivire charges on the bench, keeping continuous pressure. Pokémon Center Lady provides healing to extend either attacker's lifespan. This dual-attacker plan prevents dead turns when one line is short on energy.
Electivire at fewer than four energy hits only 40 damage — completely non-threatening. If you can deal 120 damage to Electivire over two turns before it is fully charged, you score 1 point and prevent a full-powered swing. Ground-type or high-damage attackers accomplish this before Volkner can build the energy stack.
At 120 HP and retreat cost 3, Electivire is both easy to KO and hard to rescue. Dragging it active before it is ready — or dealing enough damage to put it in KO range — traps it in the active spot where it cannot safely retreat. Any attacker capable of 120 damage ends the game here.
Magmortar is Electivire's primary companion attacker. Applying bench damage to Magmar early, or using disruption to delay its evolution, removes the backup plan. If Magmortar never appears and Electivire is slow to charge, the deck has no consistent early-game attacker and falls behind quickly.
