Key Moves & Abilities

Soul Shot(Gourgeist)
70

Discard a card from your hand. If you can't, this attack does nothing.

Strategy Guide

Auto-generated

Gourgeist builds a psychic engine around Soul Shot — a single-energy 70-damage attack that requires discarding a card from your hand each use. The win condition is reaching 3 points faster than the opponent by repeatedly knocking out low-HP targets while Houndstone provides a secondary attacker.

Open by using Poké Ball to find Pumpkaboo and Greavard as early bench presence, then draw into Gourgeist and Houndstone through Professor's Research and Copycat. Peculiar Plaza smooths energy access while you build your discard pile as fuel for Soul Shot. Mid-game you aim to attack every turn — Soul Shot's discard requirement means you need a steady hand size, so Professor's Research is critical. Finish by chaining KOs on single-point targets to reach 3 points before the opponent can threaten your 110-HP stage-ones.

Strengths

  • Soul Shot costs only 1 Psychic energy, letting Gourgeist attack on turn 2 or 3 without complex energy setup.
  • Houndstone provides a second attacker, making it hard for opponents to shut the deck down by targeting one Pokemon.
  • Cyrus and Klefki offer disruption tools that slow down opponent setups while you maintain pressure.

Weaknesses

  • Soul Shot does nothing if you have no card to discard, making hand-management mistakes punishing.Consistency
  • At 110 HP, Gourgeist falls to many two-hit KO lines, leaving you vulnerable to tempo swings.Tempo
  • Kartana and Pyukumuku matchups sit at only 25% win rate, showing the deck struggles against certain defensive strategies.Matchup

How to Play

Cycle Hands to Keep Soul Shot Live

Soul Shot requires discarding a card every turn it fires. Use Professor's Research and Copycat to refill your hand each turn, ensuring you always have a card to pitch. Peculiar Plaza accelerates psychic energy attachment. Without consistent draw, Soul Shot stalls and your offense collapses entirely.

Deploy Houndstone as a Second Threat

Greavard sits on the bench while Gourgeist attacks, then evolves into Houndstone to open a second attack line. This two-attacker approach forces opponents to choose targets and prevents a single KO from ending your offense. Poké Ball finds Greavard as the basic in this line.

Disrupt with Cyrus and Klefki

Cyrus denies your opponent energy attachments for a turn, and Klefki adds passive disruption. Use these tools when your board is already attacking to extend your scoring lead. Meloetta provides additional psychic support on the bench to round out the threat profile.

How to Beat This Deck

Target Gourgeist Before Soul Shot Fires

Gourgeist's 110 HP means two strong hits or one boosted hit ends it. Apply pressure early so your opponent must spend turns evolving instead of attacking. If you can KO the active Gourgeist before it scores a KO, you deny them momentum and force them to rebuild from Pumpkaboo.

Disrupt Their Hand to Starve Soul Shot

Soul Shot does nothing without a card to discard. Cards like Mars or Cyrus can cut your opponent's hand size below the threshold needed to safely attack. A zero-card hand effectively turns off their entire offense for that turn, buying you time to build your own board.

Play Stall or High-HP Tanks

Decks with Pyukumuku or very high-HP Pokemon exploit the fact that 70 damage per turn is slow. A wall that requires 3 or more hits to KO lets you build a large points lead on the other side before Gourgeist can respond. Passive stall cancels their entire tempo plan.
