Key Moves & Abilities

Soul Shot(Cofagrigus)

Discard 2 cards from your hand. If you can't discard 2 cards, this attack does nothing.

Strategy Guide

Auto-generated

Cofagrigus wins by consistently dealing 120 damage with Soul Shot — enough to two-shot most ex Pokémon — while Mars, Red Card, and Rocky Helmet punish the opponent's hand and board. The deck relies on non-ex attackers so every knockout the opponent scores is worth only 1 point.

Open with Yamask and use Poké Ball to find a second copy. Evolve to Cofagrigus through natural draw via Professor's Research and Copycat. Once Cofagrigus is Active, attach 2 psychic energy and use Soul Shot for 120 damage — but only if you have 2 cards to discard; manage hand size carefully. Mid-game, use Mars to force the opponent to shuffle their hand and draw only as many cards as remaining points needed to win, disrupting setups. Diantha heals 90 damage from Cofagrigus when it has 2 or more Psychic Energy attached, at the cost of discarding 2 of those Energy. Rocky Helmet punishes attackers who hit Cofagrigus. Pokémon Center Lady and Lucky Ice Pop offset chip damage.

Damage Math

Any Pokémon

Soul Shot base 120 dmg; requires discarding 2 cards from hand

120 damage at Stage 1 cost is efficient; two-shots most bulky ex Pokémon and one-shots most non-ex Pokémon under 120 HP

Strengths

  • Soul Shot's 120 damage at Stage 1 cost is high for a non-ex Pokémon, matching or exceeding many ex attackers' output.
  • Cofagrigus scores only 1 point on KO; the opponent needs 3 separate knockouts to win, giving the deck a structural durability advantage.
  • Mars and Red Card disrupt the opponent's hand, potentially nullifying key trainers or denying evolution cards at critical moments.

Weaknesses

  • Soul Shot requires exactly 2 cards discarded; an empty or near-empty hand makes the attack deal no damage at all.Consistency
  • Oricorio, Decidueye ex, and Annihilape all win 75% against this deck; these matchups exploit Cofagrigus's vulnerabilities directly.Matchup
  • The deck runs only 2 Cofagrigus; losing both to KOs leaves Meowth as the only remaining attacker and no real path to 3 points.Consistency

How to Play

Maintain a 2-Card Discard Buffer for Soul Shot

Soul Shot deals nothing if you cannot discard 2 cards. Keep at least 2 non-essential cards in hand — spent trainers, duplicate supporters, or Meowth — specifically to feed the discard cost. Use Copycat and Professor's Research to replenish hand size after firing Soul Shot. Diantha heals 90 damage from Cofagrigus when it holds 2+ Psychic Energy, extending its longevity at the cost of 2 Energy.

Disrupt the Opponent's Hand with Mars and Red Card

Play Mars (Supporter) to force your opponent to shuffle their hand and draw only as many cards as remaining points needed to win. Play Red Card (Item) in the same turn to shrink their next draw to 3 cards, compounding the disruption. This is most effective when the opponent is mid-setup and needs a specific evolution card or trainer. Rocky Helmet forces extra chip damage onto attackers, turning Cofagrigus into a punishing target.

How to Beat This Deck

Empty the Hand to Disable Soul Shot

Cofagrigus deals zero damage if the player cannot discard 2 cards. Decks that force discard or hand-strip effects remove the discard fuel Soul Shot needs. If Cofagrigus fires a 0-damage turn, you effectively get a free attack in return. Oricorio, for example, punishes psychic-type strategies directly.

CountersOricorio

One-Shot Cofagrigus with High-Damage Attacks

Cofagrigus has 120 HP. Any attacker dealing 120 or more damage in one hit scores 1 point and removes the main attacker immediately. Decidueye ex is listed as a strongly unfavorable matchup and can eliminate Cofagrigus quickly. Without a replacement attacker, the deck cannot threaten the 120-damage Soul Shot output it depends on.

CountersDecidueye ex

Force Discards with Aggressive Hand Control

Mars forces the opponent to draw only as many cards as remaining points needed; Red Card can be played in the same turn as an Item to reduce their redraw to 3 cards. Leave them with fewer than 2 cards to discard. If Soul Shot is neutralized for even one turn, you maintain tempo and score your attacks freely while they rebuild hand size.

Common Substitutions

Bench attacker / support

  • Meowth:Single copy in top build; provides a low-cost non-ex bench presence that can threaten 1-point KO in emergencies.

Hand disruption

  • Mars:Core hand-disruption piece that pairs with Red Card to minimize the opponent's options during critical setup turns.
  • Red Card:Item card; reduces the opponent's next draw to 3 cards; can be played same turn as Mars (Supporter) to compound hand denial.
