Key Moves & Abilities

AbilityGuard Dog Visage(Stoutland)

As long as this Pokémon is in the Active Spot, attacks used by your opponent's Active Pokémon cost 1 {C} more.

Sharp Fang(Stoutland)
70
Dangerous Bite(Stoutland)
70

If your opponent's Active Pokémon is a Basic Pokémon, this attack does 70 more damage.

Strategy Guide

Auto-generated

Stoutland uses Guard Dog Visage to tax every opponent attack by 1 colorless energy, while Dangerous Bite deals 140 damage to Basic Pokémon — one-shotting most non-ex basics in the format. The deck wins by locking energy-stretched opponents out of their attacks and punishing Basic-reliant strategies.

Open by playing Lillipup and using Poké Ball to find additional Basics, then evolve toward Stoutland using Rare Candy to skip the middle stage. Place the Guard Dog Visage Stoutland in the Active Spot as soon as possible to tax the opponent's attack costs every turn. Mid-game, use Pokémon Communication alongside Professor's Research and Copycat to find the second Stoutland and bench support. In finishing turns, pivot to the 150-HP Stoutland with Dangerous Bite when facing Basic-Pokémon-heavy opponents, dealing 140 damage per swing.

Damage Math

Opponent's Basic Pokémon Active

base 70 + 70 (opponent is Basic) = 140 (Dangerous Bite)

Only applies when the opponent's Active is a Basic Pokémon.

Strengths

  • Guard Dog Visage taxes every opponent attack by 1 colorless energy, making it unaffordable for single-energy attackers without the right energy attached.
  • Dangerous Bite deals 140 damage to Basic Pokémon, one-shotting most non-ex Basics and scoring 1 point efficiently.
  • Colorless attackers need no specific energy type, giving flexibility in energy attachment and reducing the risk of being countered by energy denial.

Weaknesses

  • Stoutland is a Stage 2 with no ex backup; if both copies are KO'd without evolving, the deck stalls completely.Consistency
  • Guard Dog Visage only taxes attacks by 1 energy, which does not stop two-energy attackers from operating normally.Matchup
  • Dangerous Bite's 140-damage bonus only applies against Basic Pokémon; it deals only 70 against evolved targets.Deckbuilding

How to Play

Lock Out Single-Energy Attackers with Guard Dog Visage

As long as the Guard Dog Visage Stoutland sits in the Active Spot, every opponent attack costs 1 extra colorless energy. Attackers that need exactly 1 energy cannot attack at all until they attach another. Use this window to build your second Stoutland and load damage. Rare Candy and Pokémon Communication help reach Stoutland before the opponent powers through the lock.

Punish Basic-Heavy Decks with Dangerous Bite

Against decks that rely on Basic Pokémon as their primary attackers — Rampardos, Solgaleo ex, Leafeon ex — switch to the 150-HP Stoutland with Dangerous Bite. The 140-damage hit KOs almost every Basic in the format. Cyrus can pull a vulnerable Basic from the Bench into the Active Spot for an immediate KO.

How to Beat This Deck

Evolve Past Basic Status to Negate Dangerous Bite

Dangerous Bite's 140-damage bonus only applies to Basic Pokémon. Decks built around Stage 1 or Stage 2 attackers — Mimikyu ex, Serperior — receive only 70 damage per hit from Stoutland, well below most evolved Pokémon's HP thresholds. Prioritize evolving your attacker before bringing it to the Active Spot.

Power Through the Energy Tax with Two-Energy Attackers

Guard Dog Visage adds 1 energy to all attacks. Two-energy attackers are raised to three, but you can plan around this by saving attachments and attacking only on turns when you have sufficient energy. Build your deck around attackers that naturally run a turn ahead on energy to absorb the tax.

Target Stoutland Before Its Evolution Completes

Stoutland requires a Stage 2 evolution line. Lillipup is vulnerable before Stoutland arrives, and Rare Candy is needed to complete the evolution quickly. Aggressive decks like Mimikyu ex or Guzzlord ex that score early KOs deny the Guard Dog Visage lock entirely. Apply pressure in the first two turns to prevent the lock from ever being established.

Common Substitutions

Alternative evolution support / bench filler

  • Eevee:Present in the top build; provides an alternative evolution pathway or bench body.
  • Espeon:Present in the top build alongside Eevee; adds a secondary attacker option.
  • Goomy:Present in the top build; bench filler that may evolve into a supportive Dragon-type presence.

Hand and resource management

  • Field Blower:Present in the top build; removes opponent tools that might offset the energy tax.
