Key Moves & Abilities

AbilitySnoozing Habit(Slaking)

As long as this Pokémon is in the Active Spot, whenever you attach an Energy from your Energy Zone to it, it is now Asleep.

Knuckle Sandwich(Slaking)
150

Discard a random Energy from this Pokémon.

Strategy Guide

Auto-generated

Slaking wins by landing Knuckle Sandwich for 150 damage, one-shotting almost every target in the format. The challenge is managing Snoozing Habit, which puts Slaking to sleep each time you attach energy in the active spot, requiring careful energy management and status relief.

Open by placing Slakoth and loading Rare Candy along with draw support. Poké Ball finds Slakoth but not its evolutions, so Professor's Research, Copycat, and May must deliver Slaking. Energy attachment while Slaking is in the active spot triggers Snoozing Habit and puts it to sleep, so ideally charge energy while it is on the bench or accept the sleep and hope to wake up. Use Pichu, Mantyke, Magby, and Comfey as early bodies to buy time. Protective Poncho and Heavy Helmet provide tool-based resilience, and Sabrina forces a favorable matchup target when needed.

Damage Math

Knuckle Sandwich

base 150, cost: discard 1 random Energy

One-shots nearly all targets; one energy is discarded randomly after each use, requiring reattachment

Strengths

  • Knuckle Sandwich's 150 base damage one-shots nearly every Pokemon in the format without a coin flip.
  • Slaking is a non-ex Stage 2 at 160 HP — its KO only scores the opponent 1 point, making it highly point-efficient.
  • Colorless energy requirement means Slaking can fit into any deck without committing to a single energy type.

Weaknesses

  • Snoozing Habit puts Slaking to sleep each time you attach energy in the active spot, potentially locking it out of attacking.Other
  • Knuckle Sandwich discards a random energy after each use, demanding constant reattachment to keep attacking.Consistency
  • Retreat cost of 4 makes switching Slaking out without assistance nearly impossible.Deckbuilding

How to Play

Pre-Load Energy on the Bench Before Slaking Activates

Snoozing Habit only triggers when you attach energy in the active spot. Attach energy to Slakoth or the evolving line on your bench before it enters. Once Slaking has enough energy loaded, move it active and attack immediately without triggering sleep. This requires careful bench energy management throughout setup.

Use Utility Basics to Stall While Slaking Charges

Pichu, Mantyke, Magby, and Comfey are small basics that can sit in the active spot early, eat attacks, and give you extra turns to evolve and charge Slaking on the bench. Each absorbed hit is one more turn of setup. Poké Ball finds any of these basics to ensure bench presence on turn one.

How to Beat This Deck

Exploit Sleep to Stall Slaking's Attacks

Snoozing Habit creates windows where Slaking is asleep and may fail its coin flip to wake up, wasting its attack turn. Decks that can deal significant damage or score knockouts while Slaking is asleep gain free turns. Bench damage and spread effects are particularly useful when Slaking cannot retaliate.

KO Slaking Before It Attacks a Second Time

Slaking discards energy after each Knuckle Sandwich, then must reattach — and any reattachment in the active spot triggers sleep again. If your attacker survives the first 150-damage hit (or Slaking misses a turn due to sleep), you can deal enough damage to KO Slaking before it reloads.

Apply Bench Damage to Threaten the Slakoth Line

Slaking takes multiple turns to evolve from Slakoth. Spreading bench damage onto the evolving line forces the opponent to either promote an underpowered backup attacker or lose Slaking before it ever fires. Deck disruption and spread attackers create this pressure most efficiently.

Common Substitutions

Early stall bodies

  • Pichu:Absorbs early attacks while Slaking evolves and charges on the bench
  • Comfey:Another low-value basic that buys time without risking a meaningful point gain for the opponent

Draw and search

  • May:Provides draw to find Slaking and Rare Candy more reliably
