During your opponent's next turn, this Pokémon takes −30 damage from attacks.
Golem is a 160-HP Stage 2 fighting attacker that hits 120 damage and reduces incoming damage by 30 the following turn, building a durable offensive wall that grinds through opponents over multiple turns. The deck wins by stacking damage reduction with healing items to make Golem nearly unkillable while it repeatedly attacks for 120.
Open by placing Geodude with Poke Ball and using Brock or Rare Candy to build toward Golem quickly. Lillie and Copycat refuel your hand while Golem takes early hits. Once Golem is active, Guard Press creates a cycle: 120 damage on your turn, then only 90 or less damage incoming on the opponent's turn thanks to the 30 reduction. Heavy Helmet discourages opponent bench sniping, and Lucky Ice Pop plus Big Malasada keep Golem's 160 HP topped up. Hiking Trail supports the fighting energy flow.

Effective wall: Golem deals 120 while absorbing only 90 from a 120-damage attacker
Get Golem active and fire Guard Press every turn. The 30 damage reduction means a 120-damage attacker only deals 90 to Golem. Stack Big Malasada and Lucky Ice Pop healing to recover that 90 between turns, creating a loop where Golem consistently deals 120 while losing very few net HP per exchange.
Geodude into Golem is a two-stage evolution. Brock provides fighting-type support to accelerate setup, while Rare Candy allows skipping Graveler entirely. Getting Golem into the Active slot by turn 3 or 4 is critical before opponents establish their own win condition.
Guard Press only reduces damage from attacks hitting Golem directly. Bench damage from abilities or indirect effects bypasses the reduction entirely. Golem's heavy retreat cost also means it cannot easily dodge targeted bench attacks, making bench-snipe strategies particularly effective.
Decks like Magnezone and Skeledirge win at 75% against Golem, suggesting they bypass the 30 damage reduction through damage multiplication or special conditions. If your attacker hits well over 160 damage in one or two turns, the wall crumbles before healing items can compensate.
The build runs only 1 Graveler. If Geodude is knocked out before Golem evolves, the player has no path to Stage 2 and must rely on a second Golem evolving from the second Geodude through Graveler — both needing to draw naturally. Pressure during early turns disrupts the entire engine.
