Strategy Guide

Archeops is a spread-damage fossil deck that uses Wild Spin to deal 20 damage to every opposing Pokemon simultaneously, with the follow-up turn boosting that spread to 40 per Pokemon. The win condition is accumulating enough spread damage to knock out multiple weakened Pokemon in quick succession and score points faster than the opponent can recover.

Open by deploying Archen or Cranidos using Skull Fossil or Plume Fossil, since fossil mechanics require specific trainer cards to put these Pokemon into play. Evolve into Archeops and Rampardos through natural draw via Professor's Research and Copycat, then use Rare Candy to accelerate the Rampardos line. Mid-game, alternate Wild Spin turns to stack the +20 bonus on successive attacks, spreading damage across all opponent Pokemon. In the finishing turns, Hitmonlee or Rampardos can clean up weakened targets that Wild Spin has chipped low.

Damage Math

All Opponent's Pokemon

Wild Spin 20 first use + 40 second consecutive use = 60 accumulated per target over two turns

With four opponent Pokemon, two consecutive Wild Spins deal 240 total damage spread across the board.

Strengths

  • Wild Spin hits every opposing Pokemon simultaneously — a single attack threatens multiple knockouts when targets are pre-damaged.
  • The +20 consecutive bonus means staying active and repeating Wild Spin doubles effective spread output each subsequent turn.
  • Favorable against Gengar ex, Mega Gardevoir ex, and Venusaur ex (75% each) — archetypes that rely on heavily benched evolving lines.

Weaknesses

  • Fossil mechanic requires Skull Fossil or Plume Fossil trainer cards to get Archen and Cranidos into play — missing fossils stalls setup.Consistency
  • Wild Spin's base 20 damage is very low against single-target high-HP attackers; spreading thin against a one-Pokemon lineup wastes the spread advantage.Deckbuilding
  • Magnezone, Flareon ex, and Infernape ex all show 25% win rates, indicating these archetypes hard-counter this fighting deck.Matchup

How to Play

Establish Fossils Early to Put Evolving Lines Into Play

Archeops and Rampardos cannot enter play through normal means — Skull Fossil and Plume Fossil are the entry points for Cranidos and Archen respectively. Prioritize playing these trainer cards in your opening turns. Once the fossils are in play, evolve through Rare Candy for Rampardos and natural draw for Archeops, activating the spread attack engine as soon as possible.

Chain Wild Spin to Stack Spread Damage Across the Board

Wild Spin's consecutive-turn bonus makes repeated use essential. Attack on turn one for 20 to all targets, then on turn two attack for 40 to all targets. Each damaged benched Pokemon is now in cleanup range for Hitmonlee or Rampardos. Giant Cape and Hiking Trail protect Archeops during this spread window and set up favorable exchanges.

How to Beat This Deck

Run a Minimal Bench to Limit Wild Spin Value

Wild Spin's power comes from hitting every opponent Pokemon simultaneously. Keeping your bench empty or holding a single backup attacker means each Wild Spin hits one or two targets for low damage rather than spreading across four. Minimal bench strategies neuter the spread plan and force Archeops into one-on-one exchanges where 20-40 damage per turn is insufficient.

Exploit Fighting Weakness With Fire-Type Attackers

Archeops is a fighting-type Pokemon with a fire-type weakness. Fire attackers landing type-effective damage can KO Archeops in a single hit despite its 140 HP. Flareon ex and Infernape ex exploit this directly, confirming the hard counter. One KO on Archeops scores a point and forces the opponent back to the slow fossil-based rebuild.

Target Fossil Trainer Cards With Hand Disruption

Without Skull Fossil or Plume Fossil in hand, the fossil lines cannot enter play at all. Hand disruption from Cyrus during early turns can strip fossil trainers before they are played. An opponent who cannot put Archen or Cranidos into play never assembles the attacking core and is stuck without primary attackers.

Common Substitutions

Spread damage cleaner

  • Rampardos:High-damage single-target attacker that finishes off Wild Spin-damaged targets and adds an additional attacker body.
  • Hitmonlee:Non-fossil fighter that cleans up spread-damaged benched targets when Archeops needs to stay active for Wild Spin chaining.
