Strengths

  • 180-damage Raging Blaze at low HP one-shots virtually every attacker in the current format, including most Mega ex.
  • 220 HP is among the highest in the game, giving Mega Charizard X ex extreme durability before reaching its power threshold.
  • 68% favorable matchup into Raikou ex and 67% into Annihilape confirm the low-HP threshold activates reliably in fast-damage matchups.

Weaknesses

  • As a Mega ex, Mega Charizard X ex awards 3 points on KO — losing it means the opponent wins immediately.Mega KO = lose
  • Raging Blaze deals only 100 damage at full HP; opponents can avoid the boosted phase by denying damage or healing.Tempo
  • Stage 2 Mega evolution requires a long setup chain through Charmander and Charmeleon; slow hands fall behind early.Consistency
  • Guzzlord ex and Baxcalibur decks (25% win rate) can one-shot Mega Charizard X ex before it reaches the power threshold.Matchup

Key Moves & Abilities

Raging Blaze(Mega Charizard X ex)
100

If this Pokémon’s remaining HP is 110 or less, this attack does 80 more damage.

Strategy Guide

Auto-generated

Mega Charizard X ex plays at full power once below half HP — Raging Blaze jumps from 100 to 180 fire damage when remaining HP is 110 or less. The win condition is reaching that damage threshold while opponents cannot burst through 220 HP in one hit.

Open by benching Charmander and attaching fire energy; use Poke Ball to search the Basic and Rare Candy or Charmeleon to advance the evolution line. Skeledirge in the Fuecoco line provides bench support once established. Flame Patch accelerates energy to the bench during development turns. Once Mega Charizard X ex is active with 3 fire energy, Raging Blaze deals 100 damage — tolerable but not decisive. The real threat activates when Mega Charizard X ex absorbs damage and drops below 110 HP, at which point Raging Blaze becomes 180 and one-shots nearly every target in the game.

How to Play

Absorb Damage to Activate Raging Blaze

Deliberately let Mega Charizard X ex take hits that bring it to 110 HP or below. With 220 HP you control when the threshold triggers — often after 2-3 opponent attacks. Pokémon Center Lady can reset HP if timing is premature. Skeledirge on the bench provides additional support. Once below 110 HP, 180-damage Raging Blaze finishes any target.

Accelerate Flame Patch Energy During Setup

Flame Patch attaches fire energy to benched Pokemon outside normal attachment. Use it during Charmander and Charmeleon turns to have 3 energy ready the moment Mega Charizard X ex enters play. Rare Candy skips Charmeleon and gets Mega Charizard X ex active faster. May and Copycat supplement draw to find the evolution pieces before opponents apply lethal pressure.

How to Beat This Deck

One-Shot Mega Charizard X ex at Full HP

At full HP Mega Charizard X ex has 220 health and deals only 100 damage. If you can deliver 220 damage in a single hit, you score 3 points and win immediately. Guzzlord ex and Baxcalibur decks accomplish this — build to that threshold before Mega Charizard X ex drops below 110 HP and becomes an 180-damage threat.

Prevent the Threshold with Healing

Mega Charizard X ex is only dangerous below 110 HP. If you play Pokémon Center Lady or equivalent healing onto it (forcing it above 110 HP) after it takes damage, you keep it permanently in the weak-output zone. This denies the 180 boost and reduces every Raging Blaze to 100 damage — manageable for bulky attackers.

CountersPokémon Center Lady

Target the Evolution Chain Before Mega Arrives

Mega Charizard X ex needs Charmander then Charmeleon. Sabrina drags Charmander active for a cheap 1-point KO that resets the entire evolution clock. Without Charmeleon on the board, Rare Candy has no target; the 220-HP threat never appears. Pressure the Basic line hard in turns 1-3 to keep Mega Charizard X ex off the field entirely.
