How do I know which pack to open in Pokemon TCG Pocket?

Are pull rates different between pack variants?

The rarity slot rates are the same across all packs — for example, the chance of the rare slot being a Double Rare is always 1.67%. But the pool of cards in each rarity tier differs per pack, so the chance of getting a specific card varies by which pack you open.

Can the same card appear in multiple packs within the same set?

Yes. Common and Uncommon cards typically appear in all pack variants. Higher rarity cards (Rare, EX, Art Rare, etc.) are usually exclusive to one or two specific packs.

How many packs do I need to get a specific card?

It depends on the card's rarity and the number of other cards sharing that rarity slot in the pack. For example, a Rare card with 10 other Rares in the same pack needs roughly 200 packs on average. Use the Pack Advisor to get exact estimates for any card.

Understanding Pack Variants

In Pokemon TCG Pocket, each expansion set is divided into pack variants, usually named after featured Pokemon. For example, Genetic Apex has Mewtwo, Charizard, and Pikachu packs. While Common and Uncommon cards appear in all variants, rare cards are typically exclusive to specific packs.

This matters because opening the wrong pack means zero chance of pulling pack-exclusive cards — no matter how many packs you open. The Pack Advisor ensures you focus your resources on the right pack.

How Pull Rates Work Per Pack

The rarity slot probability is the same across all packs — for example, every pack has a 1.67% chance that the rare slot yields a Double Rare card. But the specific card probability depends on how many cards share that rarity slot in your chosen pack.

If the Mewtwo pack has 8 Double Rare cards and the Charizard pack has 12, your per-card odds are better in the Mewtwo pack (1.67% ÷ 8 = 0.21% vs 1.67% ÷ 12 = 0.14%). This difference compounds over hundreds of pack openings.
