During Pokémon Checkup, if this Pokémon is in the Active Spot, do 10 damage to each of your opponent's Pokémon.
Discard the top card of your deck.
Flygon ex uses its Sand Slammer ability to deal 10 passive damage to every opponent Pokemon during each Checkup phase, then finishes with Dragon Pulse for 140 damage. The win condition is accumulating Sand Slammer chip across the opponent's full board while Dragon Pulse scores 2-point knockouts on high-value ex targets.
You open with Poké Ball to find Trapinch, then use Rare Candy to skip Vibrava and reach Flygon ex as fast as possible, since Sand Slammer only activates while Flygon ex occupies the Active Spot. Every Checkup phase deals 10 damage to every opposing Pokemon — after two turns that is 20 chip on each opposing Pokemon in play. In the mid-game you build toward Dragon Pulse by attaching Grass and Fighting energy, supported by Cyrus to stall or redirect the opponent's Active. Dragon Pulse at 140 damage knocks out almost any non-ex target instantly and pushes ex Pokemon close to KO range after Sand Slammer accumulation. Sylveon ex or Goomy variants in flex slots provide secondary coverage when Flygon ex is threatened.
Opponent's full board — Sand Slammer accumulation over 3 turns
10 per Pokemon per Checkup × 3 turns × 4 targets (1 Active + 3 Benched max) = 30 chip on every opposing Pokemon
By turn 3 with continuous Sand Slammer, a 100-HP Pokemon needs only 70 more damage from Dragon Pulse to knock out — well within the 140 base.
Ex Pokemon — Dragon Pulse after 2 Sand Slammer ticks
140 Dragon Pulse + 20 accumulated chip = 160 effective damage on the primary target
Enough to one-shot most 150-HP ex Pokemon after two Checkup phases.
Sand Slammer only triggers during Checkup when Flygon ex is in the Active Spot. Every turn Flygon ex is not Active loses 10 chip across every opposing Pokemon. Use X Speed to reduce retreat cost when forced out, and Cyrus to redirect the opponent's active target rather than retreating. The longer Flygon ex stays Active, the more passive damage accumulates for Dragon Pulse to convert into knockouts.
Poké Ball finds Trapinch and Rare Candy jumps directly to Flygon ex. Professor's Research and Copycat provide the raw draw to find both pieces within the first two turns. Vibrava is an optional middle step — the top build runs it at only 50% inclusion. Getting Flygon ex Active by turn 2 or 3 means Sand Slammer starts chipping the opponent before they have a full board established.
Rocky Helmet in the flex slots deals additional damage whenever the opponent attacks into Flygon ex. Combined with ongoing Sand Slammer ticks, even a multi-HP ex Pokemon can be brought into Dragon Pulse KO range within two or three exchanges. Lucky Ice Pop in flex adds survivability to protect Flygon ex from early knockouts that would reset your chip accumulation.
Sand Slammer is only dangerous if Flygon ex remains Active for multiple Checkup phases. Any attacker that can KO Flygon ex in one or two hits — before 20-30 chip stacks on your board — resets the entire passive damage plan. Flygon ex has 180 HP, but Dragon Pulse's discard also weakens the deck over time. Score the 2-point knockout as early as possible.
Cyrus can be used by either player — if you play Cyrus before the Flygon ex player does, you can force Flygon ex to the bench where Sand Slammer does not activate. Any forced-retreat play or opponent-switching card breaks the Checkup chain. With no Sand Slammer ticks, Dragon Pulse alone at 140 damage becomes the only damage source.
Flygon ex lists frequently run Sylveon ex, Goomy, or Indeedee ex as secondary options. Use Sabrina to pull one of these bench Pokemon into the Active Spot and eliminate it before Flygon ex can swing. Removing bench support reduces the opponent's ability to chain attackers after Flygon ex is eventually knocked out.
