Strengths

  • Draco Meteor spreads damage to the bench, threatening multiple knockouts in subsequent turns without requiring precise targeting.
  • Electivire and Melmetal lose to Dragonite 75% of the time; Draco Meteor's spread bypasses single-target defensive tools like Hard Coat.
  • Giant Cape adds survivability to Dragonite's 160 HP, making it harder to knock out in one hit and allowing repeated Draco Meteor attacks.

Weaknesses

  • Drago Meteor's randomness means all hits can cluster on a single healthy target while benched threats remain untouched.Consistency
  • Toxapex and Castform Sunny Form both win 75% against this deck; decks with consistent answers to 160 HP Stage 2 Pokémon break the Dragonite loop.Matchup
  • The 2-2-2 evolution line requires multiple turns to establish; Dratini and Dragonair can be knocked out before Dragonite ever attacks.Tempo

Strategy Guide

Auto-generated

Dragonite wins by spreading 50 damage across multiple opponents with Draco Meteor, knocking out several Pokémon within the same point swing and forcing the opponent to defend two or three targets at once. Each hit on a random target accumulates toward knockouts that score 1-2 points each.

Open with Dratini from Poké Ball and bench a second copy for redundancy. Use Professor's Research and Copycat to dig for Dragonair and Dragonite; the evolution line must come through natural draw as no search trainer in the deck retrieves evolved Pokémon. Attach water and lightning energy while the line evolves. Mid-game, Giant Cape increases Dragonite's durability. Once Draco Meteor fires at 4 energy, all four random 50-damage hits distribute across whatever Pokémon the opponent has in play, often building KO thresholds on multiple targets simultaneously. Finish turns by cleaning up weakened Pokémon for points.

Damage Math

Single Pokémon if all 4 random hits land on it

Draco Meteor 50 per hit × 4 = 200 dmg maximum

All 4 hits landing on one target is uncommon with a 2-Pokémon board; realistically, hits split across Active and benched Pokémon

Distributed across 2-Pokémon board (average split)

~2 hits × 50 = 100 to Active + ~2 hits × 50 = 100 to bench

Draco Meteor targets are chosen at random from all opponent's Pokémon; board size determines spread variance

How to Play

Spread Damage Across the Board with Draco Meteor

Fire Draco Meteor every turn once 4 energy are attached. Each of the 4 random 50-damage hits builds toward knockouts on multiple targets. Against a small bench, more hits concentrate on fewer Pokémon — aim to reduce the opponent's board to 1-2 targets to maximize per-Pokémon damage. Use Cyrus and Hiking Trail to position favorable spreads.

Protect the Evolution Line with Draw Support

Copycat and Professor's Research are the only ways to find Dragonair and Dragonite; neither Poké Ball nor any search trainer in the deck retrieves evolved Pokémon. Play Professor's Research aggressively in the first two turns to ensure Dragonair and Dragonite are in hand before Dratini needs to evolve. Lillie adds extra hand refresh to prevent bricking on the evolution.

How to Beat This Deck

KO Dratini and Dragonair Before Evolution Completes

Dratini and Dragonair have low HP and score only 1 point each when knocked out. Attack the bench evolution pieces before they reach Dragonite. If both Dratini are knocked out, the opponent has no path to Dragonite and Draco Meteor never fires. This scores easy points while permanently dismantling the only win condition.

Limit the Bench to Reduce Spread Variance

Draco Meteor's 4 random hits are most dangerous when there are many Pokémon to spread across. Keep your own bench small — 1-2 Pokémon — so that most hits concentrate on your Active, where you can use healing to offset the 100-150 average damage received. Fewer bench targets makes Draco Meteor a predictable 4-hit attack on one Pokémon.

Out-Heal with Pokémon Center Lady

Dragonite spreads 50-damage increments that often don't immediately KO any single target. Pokémon Center Lady removes 30 damage from your Active between turns, neutralizing a full Draco Meteor hit per two heals. Against the 160-HP Dragonite, your own tank attackers plus consistent healing denies the spread-KO timing the deck depends on.
